"I know my skin and I know what I want my skin to look like, but I have no idea how to get there.”
Despite the skincare industry being more saturated than ever, most people still struggle to identify what's actually right for their skin.
My client, Dr. Sola—a dermatological scientist—had recognised this challenge early on. He wanted to create a tool that would help people actually understand what works for their unique skin, rather than just categorizing them into generic 'skin types' or pre-existing product buckets.

Working with Dr. Sola, we created MySkin.ai—an AI-powered skincare assessment that treats users as experts on their own skin.
The tool acknowledges their expertise and experiences through comprehensive questioning, provides a personalised dashboard that reflects their unique journey, and delivers ingredient recommendations backed by scientific explanations. Rather than categorising users into generic buckets, we built an experience that makes people feel genuinely heard and understood.

Users know exactly what affects their skin
They know exactly what’s going to affect it and how - from weather to hormones to what they eat.
They're well-read but stuck on specifics
Users research ingredients extensively but don't know what to use or how to use it properly for THEIR skin.
They crave scientific explanations
They don’t just want to be told what to use - they want to be educated and empowered about their skin.
Skincare is often a long trial-and-error journey
Most users have had a long history with their skin. This experience needs acknowledged, not dismissed.

Talking to users helped cement who we were designing for—people who understand their skin and have built up valuable knowledge through their personal skincare journey. Each person has their own unique situation—from different skin concerns, lifestyles, environments, and goals—but they lack a way to translate all this self-knowledge into actionable guidance that's truly tailored to them.

Based on the primary research insights, I sat with Dr. Sola to understand what information his AI-powered recommendation engine would need to provide accurate suggestions and drafted some initial questions.

With this user feedback in hand, Dr. Sola and I essentially built a decision tree of questions and refined them to make sure they captured the scientific accuracy he needed while remaining user-friendly and accessible.

Starting from scratch meant creating the entire brand identity. The biggest decision was the name: "MySkin.ai" vs "Dr. Sola AI." We chose MySkin.ai deliberately—research showed users felt frustrated when professionals dismissed their expertise, therefore, "MySkin" reinforced that they had agency over their skin.
The logo I designed carried this message forward—a fingerprint that represented the uniqueness of each individual's skin, but also a circuit pattern representing the AI technology being used. The overall design mirrored this approach: deeply personal yet technologically driven.

1.
Users were asked to identify which active ingredients were in their skincare routine. Less experienced skincare struggled to provide accurate responses, finding the question too technical.
THE SOLUTION

Similar to other complex questions, a "Need help answering?" button was added
Button opens a modal that provides users with information about where these ingredients are commonly found in skincare products, making it more accessible.
2.
Users were asked about their eating habits. However, the answer options implied frequency e.g. “I consume alcohol frequently,” which excluded those who consumed items more/less often.
THE SOLUTION

Answer options were simplified to focus on food categories e.g. “processed/packaged foods” rather than habits.
Reframed the question to "Which of the following are regularly included in your diet?" and added a qualifier for what ‘regularly’ means.
3.
While users liked the simplicity and clarity of the recommendations provided, they indicated that scientific backing and credibility indicators would build confidence in the suggestions.
THE SOLUTION

If users are interested in learning more about an ingredient, they can open a detailed card with further information
Key details about the ingredient, when and how to use it are provided in a digestible format
Scientific evidence about the ingredient is provided in the form of research studies, clinical trials and expert insights
Sources add further credibility to the information
